Ghostwood Farewell Show
Ghostwood are off to the UK! Their farewell show/fundraiser at the Oxford Art Factory last night showed just why the rest of the world needs to see this band live. Less than a year ago when TEETH first saw Ghostwood, they had packed out the Hopetoun Hotel. Yesterday the Oxford Art Factory, a much larger venue, was impossible to move through. Their gigs have become more intense, their songs more impressive and the extended version of “Rest My Soul” with a drum solo finish is amazing. Even the more familiar songs off the EP have gotten a make-over. See them live before it costs you $50 or more to do so because it’s quite obvious this band is going to take over the world, soon.
Beach Road Hotel, Bondi – 1st June
Come Together Festival, Luna Park – 7th June
For UK tour dates, check out their MySpace.
And an honourable mention goes to The Wahas who were one of the support acts last night (along with Under Lights, who we unfortunately missed, and Kirin J. Callinan who was fabulous as always) whose live shows get more impressive each time we see them and get the award for most photogenic band. Oh and the new song “Wahas Theme” is the best thing we’ve heard in a long time! :)
See The Wahas play:
Come Together Festival, Luna Park – 8th June
Sonarbar, Luna Park (with Amy Meredith) – 21st June
Supporting Grinspoon in Wollongong and at The Metro – 27th & 28th June

The Vignettes
When and how did The Vignettes become a band?
We met at a New Years Eve party hosted by mutual friends, both totally smashed! Our love of bands like NIN and Muse brought us together.
What’s your best memory so far of being The Vignettes?
Hearing ourselves on Triple J was probably the best thing so far. The second best was being asked to play Come Together.
What influences your song-writing?
The EP is sort of a concept thing, with all the songs being written about my experiences since moving to Sydney on my own. All the usual things are there - love, loneliness, anger (and lots of it), betrayal... The riffs however are an amalgamation of all my favourite songs, but with my twist on them.
What are your favourite bands and biggest musical inspirations?
The bands that inspire us are Muse, Death From Above 1979, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Vines, The Mars Volta and Led Zeppelin to name a few.
What was the best gig you’ve played so far? And worst?
Our recent stint on the main stage at the Annandale was probably our best gig. The sound was awesome, the energy was electric, and the crowd was huge.
Our worst was at the Excelsior in Glebe, a while ago now. Ten seconds into the first song we were told to 'turn it down or get the fuck out!" The audience were a bunch of backpackers who weren't paying attention to us too, so it was a pretty demeaning gig. But we got back on our feet.
What would you like The Vignettes to be doing in five years’ time?
Living in Europe, touring off the back of our second album. Possibly snorting copious amounts of cocaine off a black hooker’s ass...
Do you feel crowds have responded well to your music, or has it been tough getting people to pay attention?
"A little from column A, a little from column B." We've had our fair share of haters, but lately we've been really connecting with the crowds. Since our stage show is so in-your-face, you tend to either hate it, or become a lifetime fan right then and there. Everyone's always impressed by the size of our sound though!
You’ve played with some amazing bands. Who would you like to play with in the future?
I'd like to actually 'play' with the Vines. I do say we 'shared the stage' with them, but it was just a DJ set they did. Opening for someone ridiculous would be cool like Muse, The Hives or our new favourites Future of the Left.
Do you believe in the tooth fairy?
He's a 47-year-old paedophile that lives in Rhode Island. He steals teeth from small children the rolls around in them in his underwear.
Katie – five words to describe Joel.
Gorgeous, talented, cute, witty, funny.
Joel – five words to describe Katie.
Beautiful, powerful, opinionated, funny, strong.
Do you get a lot of White Stripes references, and if so, do they get annoying?
Not really... We've had it maybe twice. Since we have such a different (and bigger!) sound people don't really make the connection. They're pretty cool though, White Blood Cells changed my life.
What’s up next for The Vignettes? A new EP? An album perhaps…?
Well the EP 'Out of Home, On our Own' hasn't even been released yet due to the fact we have no label, so the plan is …
1. Get a label
2. Get some money
3. Make devastatingly good debut album that puts us on the musical map world wide.
4. Retire with our black hooker and our cocaine habit...
If anyone wants an EP just drop us a line at vignettesband@gmail.com with your address and we'll post one out to you for free. It's not about money, it's about EXPOSURE!

TEETH Poetry
Cigarette holed pouches
And then the little person crouches,
Behind a wall because he wasn’t very tall,
He hangs for dear life before he falls,
And crawls
And rawls
And mauls,
At her stockings.

Home
and the sound of my father laughing on the phone to relatives
over sea and sky.
Home is my unmade bed 400km from where I shield my eyes
and watch the sun set,
day in, day out.
Home is solemnly frozen and laced with heather,
whilst I swelter in the heat of summer.
And home is a teardrop in the ocean,
a harbour town,
a place that I have never been.

Nowhere Places
Nowhere places all have the same layer of surrender covering them. It seeps beneath the skin and grows inside the residents. Their eyes become lifeless pools of no questions, no answers and flies litter their bodies. I float above that layer, drawn from it by the scratches on my fingertips and the sticky-sweet smell of a stranger’s aftershave. Sometimes the click of coins on metal surfaces pulls me down towards the layer but I always levitate just high enough to lightly skim the surface with my toes.
There are five down but there is still one more to go.
I levitate, listening out for growling stomachs and looking out for yellowing fingernails. We are all in this together but we are not alike. I watch as ants crawl up my legs and as pale boys roll their cigarettes in windy weather. The air smells like tobacco and nicotine-stained dreams of clear thoughts. No filters, no triggers. Five down, one to go.
One to go.

90s Kid
Another reason school was awesome today: Healthy Harold Day. Healthy Harold Day was the best because you got to miss class to sit in a tiny caravan and listen to a talking giraffe. I had to sit next to Milan because Justine was making me laugh too much. I hated sitting next to Milan because he always wore his Chicago Bulls hat, even though it was all ripped, and he was always the first to give me "a pinch and a punch for the first day of the month - no returns"- and it actually hurt. He looked at me and said "you're real pretty. NOT!" and started laughing with his friends. I just looked at him and said "That's so funny, I forgot to laugh" and turned away. Stupid.Healthy Harold was running late, so Miss Goodwin made us sing a ram sam sam, a ram sam sam, guli guli guli guli guli, ram sam sam, a rafi, a rafi, guli guli guli guli guli ram sam sam. I hated singing that! I liked open, shut them better.
Whenever I got home from school I'd change into my bike shorts and Tweety Bird t-shirt and sit on the couch. ABC was the greatest station in the world. I loved when John was on Playschool, he always made me laugh. My favourite Playschool pairing was Monica and John. I also didn't mind Noni, and that bald guy named George. Sometimes I invited Justine over to watch Blinky Bill, Mr Squiggle and Gumby. SuperTed, Widget The World Watcher and Samurai Pizza Cats. Banana Man, Bangers and Mash and The Raggy Dolls. Johnson and Friends, Noddy and Humphrey B. Bear. The Secret World of Alex Mack. Rocko’s Modern Life, Rugrats and Hey Arnold!. A*mazing. The Ferrals. Postman Pat, Fireman Sam and Lift Off (that show with the dirty, eyeless doll named EC).
Mum used to tell me I'd get square eyes if I watched TV for too long, so I used to go next door to play the Nintendo. We always made sure to blow on the Nintendo cartridge before putting it in the console to make sure it worked properly. I always left their house at 6:00 because his parents liked to watch the news with Brian Henderson. The Channel 9 logo had dots next to it and the Channel 7 logo wasn’t a folded piece of paper.
I liked Wednesday afternoons especially because Mum did shopping on Wednesdays, and there was always the best food to eat when I got home. I always begged her to buy those 6 packs of Coco Pops, Fruit Loops, Frosties, Rice Bubbles, Nutri-Grain and Corn Flakes so I could have a different one each day, and then I'd open the packets really carefully and remove the cereal so I'd have a mini wardrobe afterwards. She hardly ever bought them though. She also hated when I stayed up past 8:30 because then it was difficult to get me up for school the next day. I liked getting up super early to see Gibbo on Agros Cartoon Connection though, so she didn't have to worry. Sometimes when Mum fell asleep early I'd check to see if SBS had any naked people so I could laugh about it in class the next day. Alas, I was face to face with Jana Wendt on SBS World News. Screw that, I'm going to bed.
Not.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall
I was actually surprised to discover that this film was not directed by Judd Apatow (The 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up) as its visual style and sense of humour is pretty similar. The cast of Forgetting Sarah Marshall is rounded out with Apatow favourites. Though I didn’t like it as much as Apatow’s work, Nicholas Stroller (long-time friend of both Apatow and Segel) does well with this as his first feature film. The script is well written and has the right combination of below-the-belt jokes and romantic comedy.
Jason Segel is excellent as Bretter, the slacker whose only career aspiration is to write a Dracula inspired musical. You genuinely feel sorry for him, but can also laugh at him as he becomes the butt of some pretty awkward situations. Bell is suitably snippy as the divalicious title character. Mila Kunis is naturally charming and surprisingly likeable as Rachel, Peter’s possible love interest. Props must also go to Jack McBrayer (best known for his role in Mariah Carey’s ‘Touch My Body’ music video), as a Christian newlywed with consummation difficulties.
The standout performance, however, is of English bad boy, Aldous Snow (Russell Brand). Brand channels British rockers including Pete Doherty, the Gallagher brothers and Keith Richards to create the totally self-absorbed Snow. His effortless brand of cool and complete obliviousness to the sensitive nature of many scenarios he finds himself in (like crushing an ambitious fan’s dream of a demo “I was just gonna listen to that, but then, um, I just carried on livin’ my life”) is priceless.
The film’s final ten minutes are its greatest. Without giving away too much, Peter’s Dracula musical opens and no one will be disappointed.
My only issue with Forgetting Sarah Marshall is that the editing, to be frank, sucks. It lacked natural transitions and was very jumpy between scenes, which really disrupted the flow of the narrative. Besides this, the film has the makings of a great comedy, and one of the best of the year to date.
